Primary Goal
Create a safe, durable pool surround that handles constant moisture exposure
Constant Moisture Had Accelerated Decay
Pool decks face a unique challenge: they're wet almost constantly during summer months, and the combination of chlorinated water, sun exposure, and foot traffic creates conditions that destroy traditional wood in just a few years. This pool deck was only eight years old, but the pressure-treated lumber had already developed severe cupping, raised grain that caught bare feet, and visible mold growth in shaded areas. Several boards had become dangerously slippery when wet.
- Severe board cupping creating trip hazards around the pool edge
- Raised grain causing splinter risk on bare feet
- Persistent mold growth despite regular cleaning
- Slippery surface when wet creating fall risk

Designed for Water, Not Against It
Pool deck design requires thinking about water as a constant presence, not an occasional challenge. We designed this replacement with drainage gaps, slip-resistant surface textures, and material selections specifically rated for pool surround applications. The layout was also reconsidered to create better sight lines for supervising swimmers and to provide both sunny and shaded zones.
PVC Decking Built for Wet Environments
TimberTech AZEK was selected specifically for its capped polymer construction. Unlike composite decking with wood fiber cores, AZEK contains no organic material that can absorb moisture or support mold growth. Its textured surface provides reliable grip when wet, and the material is impervious to chlorinated pool water, sunscreen, and the constant humidity of a pool environment.

A Pool Surround Built for Decades of Summer Use
The new pool deck has transformed how this family uses their backyard. The slip-resistant surface means no more cautious walking around the pool edge, and the elimination of splinters has made barefoot summer days worry-free. The defined zones—sunny lounging, shaded seating, and a clear path to the house—make the space work better for both everyday use and pool parties.

Why This Project Works
Material selection matters most
Pool environments require materials specifically designed for constant moisture—not just any composite will perform well.
Safety as the design driver
Every decision prioritized slip resistance, drainage, and supervision sight lines over pure aesthetics.
Corrosion-resistant hardware
Stainless steel and specialized connectors prevent the hidden fastener failures that plague pool deck structures.
Right product for the application
AZEK's synthetic construction addresses every failure mode the original wood deck exhibited.
